When the upper and lower sensing surfaces receive different light radiation, they heat up their respective thermopiles, forming cold and hot junctions, generating a thermoelectric potential. When the sum of the total solar radiation and the downward atmospheric long wave radiation is greater than the sum of the surface reflected short wave radiation and the surface long wave radiation, the net radiation is positive, otherwise it is negative.
